Feels like Fall in Winnipeg

In junior high school, we received our agendas during the first week of school.  An empty book full of dates to fill was my favourite start to Fall.  I would pencil in that first assignment.  Then fill in November 30th, "my birthday," just to write on the crisp new pages.  By the end of September, the novelty wore off.  Instead of a few neatly written assignments, every day was full of projects, assignments, volleyball practice, band concerts, etc.  Life fills up.  One of my favourite things about Fall every year is the progression between early Fall, full of unknown deadlines, and late Fall, working towards those deadlines and checking items off a list.  I love calendars.  It's part of the reason I love being an event coordinator.

Last week was crazy for me.  I'm working on four tight deadlines in October, all of which have missing pieces.  Besides work busyness, it's my son's second birthday in two weeks, and Thanksgiving, and a variety of other fun but time-consuming events.  Somewhere around Friday, I realized a couple of things.  The first is that my deadlines are mostly self-imposed.  If I want to, I can cut back on commitments.  I can say "no" to extra With a Flourish projects.  I can reschedule a birthday party until November - Miles has no idea that his birthday is coming up, anyways.  And there's no law that I have to go to Thanksgiving dinner.  The second thing that I realized is that even though I could cut back, I'm not going to.  I like being busy.  In fact, I've been far, far busier and done bigger projects with a lot less time.

It feels freeing to recognize the difference between doing projects because I have to, and doing projects because I want to.  And since I'm working because I like to, and going to every family event because I want to, I have nothing to complain about.  And since Friday, I've felt really relaxed.  I spent this morning on the phone, and will spend the next week running errands, but everything will get done.  It always does.  My agenda is half full of check marks, and half full of empty boxes, just waiting to be completed.

With a Flourish 'DIY' Article

A year ago, I received an awesome opportunity to write monthly articles for Weddings in Winnipeg.  I do really enjoy writing, so writing about weddings has been a perfect match.  This month, my last regular article appears in Weddings in Winnipeg.  It's twofold for me:  I'm a little sad to stop writing articles, but excited that I have more time to develop my blog, newsletter, and other projects.

The last article is about DIY projects - as a coordinator, I help clients personalize their wedding, and DIY projects are a great way to do this.  I'm also there to gently let clients know when they are taking on too many projects, and help them to budget their time and money to get the most for their effort.  You can click here to read the article, or pick up a copy of Weddings in Winnipeg around the city.

Eco-Friendly Salon in Winnipeg - Berns & Black

Over the past couple of years I've really become aware of the chemicals that exist in cosmetics and hair products.  I'll write another post next week about what some of these chemicals are and what they do, but for now I just want to talk about the good things that people are doing in the world of hair products.

Back in May, a salon opened in Winnipeg's exchange district called Berns & Black.  Today I stopped in and got an impromptu tour from one of the (very talented) stylists.  The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the beautiful decor - the salon is trendy and comfortable at the same time.  The second thing I noticed - no smell.  Well, a bit of a smell, but a light fresh smell.  None of the strong, chemical smell that usually lives in salons.  Why not?  Because Berns & Black is eco-friendly.  They use organic hair dyes, alternative nail treatments, and sugaring instead of waxing all to cut down on chemicals.  They also sell a product line called Onesta, which has no harmful ingredients.  Today, I bought the hairspray, and it has a light coconut-y smell.  I almost feel like it won't work because I won't emerge from the bathroom in a cloud of stench anymore, (as if the smell had something to do with the effectiveness) but I'm sure it will be fantastic!

If you are looking for a stylist for your wedding day hair (or every day hair), check out Berns & Black at 468 Main Street.

Our Shop Local Challenge

In Spring, Sam and I decided to take on a challenge for the summer:  From June 1st - October 31st (coinciding with Farmer's Market season), we would not shop at large grocery stores.  Specifically, we cut out Safeway, Sobeys, and Superstore, and have been only shopping at smaller, local stores (before the challenge started we were usually shopping local, but not always).

Three and a half months in to the five month challenge, and we're finally developing a long list of meal ideas, and eating good tasting food.  We've been shopping at Blue Earth Organics, Eat It, Vital Health, and the St. Norbert Farmer's Market.  We moved at the beginning of August, and Blue Earth and Eat It were closer to our old place, and Vita Health is closer to our new place.  Shopping at Blue Earth is still worth the drive most of the time - I know their selection and often come away with a recipe as well:)

The second part of the challenge was that our food bill was crazy high and we wanted to cut it down.  I know, it doesn't make sense - cutting back on spending but shopping at more expensive stores.  For example, organic milk is about twice as expensive as regular milk.  It's worth it.  To make up for the extra costs, we cut way back on meat and planted a garden.  I'm learning to be creative with bean & vegetable recipes, and luckily my family is pretty forgiving - they eat almost anything.

Our garden has been fantastic.  We got a great crop of potatoes, parsley, chives, peas, tomatoes and hot peppers.  We also got one cauliflower, one eggplant, some lettuce, and a couple of carrots.  Our prime crop was zucchini, which we've been eating for over two months now.  Almost daily.  I'm close to sick of zucchini and starting to grate and freeze it.  I'll also note that since we'd never gardened before, we didn't know anything about organic gardening, or fertilizers & chemicals, etc.  So we didn't use anything at all on our plants except water, and we were really happy with the way it turned out.

It's also been neat to cook with local ingredients.  When spinach was growing, we ate lots of spinach, now that peppers are here, we're eating lots of peppers.  It's a really strange concept to be unable to plan meals - local stores are not like Superstore - they do not carry every product all the time.  They carry in-season produce.  I've never liked canned or store-bought frozen vegetables, so I plan meals after buying a load of groceries.  So far I haven't thrown anything away, and if there is no recipe to include the foods that I buy, we just eat them as they are or I throw everything in a pot.

This is a personal post, but the idea for With a Flourish started about a year after our decision to pursue a more earth-friendly lifestyle.  The business and my life are intertwined in many ways, and both are growing together.

Featured Wedding Blog

One of the blogs that I read regularly is Elizabeth Anne Designs.  The blog is full of inspiration and ideas from brides, and it has a very cheerful vibe.  If you are looking for wedding ideas, be sure to check it out.  And now, I'm excited to be the first Winnipeg vendor included in the Library.  You can find me in tiny writing at the bottom of the page under "International".  Yay!

With a Flourish Wedding Day-Of Coordination

I met the bride of my latest wedding at the Forks on a warm summer night. When I noticed her walk in having obviously bicycled there, I thought this was someone I would really get along with. When she started telling me about the early morning swim she had planned for her wedding guests, I thought maybe we wouldn't get along after all...just kidding. Let me explain:

The couple got married at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church on a Thursday evening, and had a reception directly following the ceremony in the Church hall. Then, they invited their guests to go spend the weekend with them at a summer camp. The early morning swim was to take place at the camp, along with a weekend of celebration. What they needed help with was the logistics of the Thursday night reception - set up and keeping the food stocked during the celebration.

From the locally grown flowers from Strawberry Lane to the very cute cupcakes from The Cake Craze, the wedding was beautiful. Local honey was provided as the favours, and the photos, including the ones on this blog, were taken by Larisa Lotoski.

The best way that I can describe this couple is thoughtful. Their wedding was carefully planned to allow them time to spend mingling with their guests, and to provide a relaxed, celebratory atmosphere. It was a noisy, smiley, wonderful evening and I am so glad to have been part of it.

Also, they win best couple of the summer for leaving fruit and chocolate in the workroom for the With a Flourish team. Thanks you two and all the best in married life!

Handmade Wedding: Flower Girl Dresses

I came across these flower girl dresses a couple of weeks ago, and I love them. They are all the things a little girl's dress should be: pink, flowery, and ruffle-y. The prints and the bows are fabulous, and the model is really cute as well:) These dresses and others can be found on Etsy, in Fattie Pie's Shop:

Featured Winnipeg Vendor: Green Bean Coffee

I'm sitting at my desk, sipping my morning coffee and thinking of blog ideas for the next couple of weeks. Sometimes ideas are right under my nose, and in this case I am drinking a blog post.

Since beginning my fair-trade journey, I've tried almost every brand of fair-trade coffee I can find in Winnipeg. Green Bean coffee is a brand that I see often but have never bought until now. The packaging is so slick, the branding so well done, that I just assumed Green Bean was a huge coffee corporation trying to act like a little guy. But recently, Sam brought home a package and we've been enjoying it.

On Saturday, walking around the St. Norbert's Farmers Market, we passed the Green Bean stand, as we always do (but had never looked at closely), and my husband started talking to the men behind the table. It turns out, he was talking to Derryl, who owns Green Bean Coffee Imports, which is located here in Manitoba! We were so excited to talk to Derryl, who obviously loves his job and loves coffee, that we will definitely be picking up Green Bean more often.

So what does this have to do with weddings? Green Bean has a favour-sized bag of coffee beans, which they can customize with your names, wedding colours, or graphics that you want. This is a perfect way to introduce your guests to fair-trade coffee, and give them a gift that they will surely enjoy.

Vintage Wedding Reception Card Boxes

I can admit that one of my least favourite decor items at most weddings (although not ones that I plan!) is the vessel used to collect envelopes, usually on or near the guest book table. I'm just not a fan of white satin mailboxes, birdcages, or anything with tulle hot-glued onto it.

I prefer to use out of the ordinary containers like tins, baskets, or unique vases, hopefully something unique that doesn't scream I hope there's some cash in that envelope and matches the theme of the wedding.
.
Here are a few items that could be re-purposed into a card box:

Antique cake box from Steptoes Vintage Wares:

Queens of Vintage:

Lunch Kit from Feather Your Nest:

Featured Winnipeg Business: Freelance Assistant

This post pertains more to the business side of With a Flourish than the sit-in-pajamas-and-read Martha Stewart Weddings side, but unfortunately paperwork and details are part of owning a business.

Fortunately, there is software available to keep me on track, but because most wedding planning software is American designed, here in Canada my option is to use Canadian accounting software and an American program to keep track of everything else business related. However, there is good news! Avenir IT, which is a Winnipeg based IT support company owned by my friend Mathieu Manaigre, has recently created a Canadian program called Freelance Assistant that is so simple even I can use it. It is a single entry system, perfect for small business owners, and has received great reviews from business owners and bookkeepers. It's not wedding specific, but the tools make it possible for me to keep track of more than simply finances, my favourite being that I can keep notes on weddings - my couples are listed by name and not just by number, and I can store all their wedding information on Freelance Assistant. It's also hosted online, which means that I can check my account from any computer with internet, and my bookkeeper or employees could have access with a password.

If you are a new or existing business looking for a new way to keep organized, please check out Freelance Assistant. Also, if you need small business or at home computer support, contact Avenir IT. Mathieu is truly fantastic with computers and has saved mine more than once :)

Weddings With a Flourish Blog Changes

If you're a frequent reader, you've likely noticed that there are a few changes on the blog this week. The purpose is to make the blog more informative and easier to navigate. For example, there is a search bar on the right hand side, links to blogs I find inspirational, and links to Winnipeg vendors that I have worked with and recommend. Please let me know if there is anything else that should be included. Also, as always, you're welcome to send in wedding questions about design, planning, etiquette, etc. to feature on the blog.

Enjoy!
